Beyond Sinners: The Stories of Clarksdale, Mississippi 

 

During the theatrical release of Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, I learned that the movie was based on, and inspired by, my hometown, Clarksdale, Mississippi. I then wondered how residents would see Sinners when the town doesn’t have a movie theater. I amplified the community’s open letter, collaborated to help bring free screenings, and moderated a Q&A where I interviewed Ryan Coogler, cast and crew. The efforts culminated in a year-long project covering the community. 

 

The First Black Mayor of Newbern, Alabama 

My coverage on a Black mayor blocked from office in Alabama won a 2024 Community Voice and Anthem Award. It was also selected for PopShift’s 2025 IP List, a category of journalism ready to be adapted to TV and film.

 

Disconnected: Rural Black America and the Digital Divide 

My project documented the challenges Black communities face to connect to high-speed internet. The project was a finalist for the 2024 Institute for Nonprofit News’ Breaking Barriers Award.

 

Mississippi Delta Cultural Heritage Ambassadors Programs 

From 2024 to 2025, she served as project editor and instructor for the Mississippi Delta Cultural Heritage Ambassadors Program, a two-year training program for residents in Coahoma County to share and develop skills needed to research historic sites and create a cultural heritage tour. The program, co-created by StoryWorks, was in partnership with Delta State University with support from the Walton Family Foundation
