Aallyah Wright is a journalist and storyteller whose work is rooted in honoring, celebrating, and documenting the stories of the rural Black American South.

 

Currently, she is the inaugural Rural Issues Reporter at Capital B, where her community-centered reporting on farmers, land disputes, and culture take center stage. Her impactful reporting helped bring the Hollywood production of Ryan Coogler’s Sinners to Mississippi. Wright’s commitment to uplighting the voices of the Mississippi Delta earned her the 2026 Higher Purpose Hub Storyteller of The Year Award. Her work on the digital divide was a 2024 INN Breaking Barriers Award finalist, and her story on a Black mayor blocked from office in Alabama won a 2024 Community Voice and Anthem Award.

 

She is also editorial director of StoryWorks, a documentary theater organization that works at the intersection of investigative journalism and free community centered art. She is the co-writer of “Wade Through the Waters” which earned a 2020 Mississippi Humanities Council award. Previously, Aallyah covered rural affairs for Stateline and reported on education for Mississippi Today as the inaugural Delta reporter. As a member of the Delta Bureau, she investigated Mississippi’s teacher shortage and founded the Mississippi Delta Public Newsroom. She is a graduate of Delta State University where she earned a Bachelors’ in Journalism with a minor in communication and theater.
